An AI optimization strategy is only as strong as what LLMs can actually read. Slow load times and heavy JavaScript can make a site effectively invisible to AI crawlers, and a page that AI can't read is a page that AI can't cite. 

Google's Core Web Vitals documentation sets specific thresholds for whether a page loads well enough to be read reliably. Main content should load in under 2.5 seconds, for example, and a page's cumulative layout shift score should stay under 0.1 seconds. Google's own AI optimization guidance points brands at the same signals. 

These raw signals aren't difficult to obtain. Load speed, layout stability, responsiveness, and JavaScript weight all come from free, no-authentication APIs, which means any team with technical SEO knowledge can pull them for every URL in a sitemap. While a technically perfect page is not inherently more likely to get cited by an AI system, poor performance can create barriers to accessing and ingesting otherwise valuable content. Simply put, a page that's too slow for Google is too slow for every AI crawler. 

That's why a technical SEO audit (which contains no AI citation data) isn't enough for the era of AEO. SEO audits are built for search engines rather than AI crawlers and answer a ranking question rather than a readability one. Clearing Google's thresholds is closer to a precondition than a differentiator: it ensures that a webpage can be read by AI systems, but doesn’t guarantee that AI will cite that page.
